Medication is one type of treatment that can be used. But sometimes certain medications need to be avoided because they may cause side effects either on their own or in combination with other medications that you may already be taking for another health condition. The medication may also be contraindicated in some health conditions (pregnancy). As well, more and more people simply would prefer to not use medication to manage their migraines if possible. So what options are available then?
A recent study1 has come out comparing the manual therapies of chiropractic (spinal adjustments), massage therapy, and physiotherapy, and seeing how they compare to conventional medication (propranolol and topiramate) for the treatment of migraine headaches. What they found was that these therapies offered benefits of reduced intensity, duration, and frequency of migraines similar to that of medication.
What does this mean? It means that there are options besides medication for the treatment of migraine headaches. It means that for those who don’t want to take medication, or for those who aren’t able to tolerate the medications, there is good evidence supporting what manual therapists do, and have known for a long time.
